Reserving IP addresses
You may reserve IP addresses for particular hosts, identifying them by hostname and
MAC address. These reserved hosts are also added to the /etcconfig/hosts file (static
hosts) for DNS purposes; see the Static Hosts section of this chapter. This allows the
computers on the LAN to use the names even if there is no other DNS server around.
This is useful for sites that are too small to run a DNS/WINS server. Both the DHCP
reserved hosts and the Static hosts configuration work together so that when you create
a MyWebServer 10.0.0.5 machine, everyone on the internal network can ping and
connect to it (even though it is not a Windows host, which would broadcast its name to
everybody).
To reserve an IP address for a certain host, enter the following in the Add Reserved IP
address section.
Enter the Hostname of the DHCP client.
Enter the MAC Address of the DHCP client.
Enter the reserved IP Address for the DHCP client.
Click Submit.
DHCP status
This main DHCP server page displays the status for each interface on which the DHCP
server is running. There are Edit, Delete and Enable/Disable icons displayed for each
Interface.
